Larval Evolution: I’ll Tail You Later…

چکیده
Larval stages can be astonishingly different from their adult forms. A new study in acorn worms shows that the whole larval body is patterned only with a subset of anterior genes, revealing the intricate developmental bases that underlie the evolution of larval forms.

(Invited Talk) Clueless: Explorations in Unsupervised, Knowledge-Lean Extraction of Lexical-Semantic Information
Why is it that if you know I’ll give a silly talk, it follows that you know I’ll give a talk, whereas if you doubt I’ll give a good talk, it doesn’t follow that you doubt I’ll give a talk? This pair of examples shows that the word “doubt” exhibits a special but prevalent kind of behavior known as downward entailingness — the licensing of reasoning from supersets to subsets, so to speak, but not...
متن کاملPACEM: Cooperative Control for Citywide Energy Management
Proto/Amorphous Cooperative Energy Management (PACEM) controls energy demand across an entire metropolitan area by coordinating the behavior of individual electrical appliances. The goal of this project is to demonstrate the feasibility of PACEM by showing smooth demand shaping and additive scaling using cheap, decentralized communication hardware, both in simulation and on a test system of 50-...
متن کاملPromises and Threats with Conditionals and Disjunctions
With a conditional “If you do . . . , I’ll do . . . ” we can make promises and threats. But with a disjunction “You do . . . , or I’ll do . . . ” we can only make threats, no promises. We suggest that this so because disjunctive promises would be a suboptimal strategic commitment in a game-like situation where the speaker is trying to influence the hearer’s
متن کاملOne More Step and You’ll get Pseudo-Imperatives Right
Abstract We consider pseudo-imperatives like Come near (and) I’ll show you, which have a conditional interpretation (‘if you come near, I’ll show you’). We show that they have basically the same semantics as Sufficiency Modal Constructions studied by von Fintel and Iatridou (2007). We provide a detailed analysis of ‘sufficiency’ in Lewis’s counterfactual framework, extending the analysis to pse...
متن کاملThe evolution of larval morphology and swimming performance in ascidians.
The complexity of organismal function challenges our ability to understand the evolution of animal locomotion. To meet this challenge, we used a combination of biomechanics, phylogenetic comparative analyses, and theoretical morphology to examine evolutionary changes in body shape and how those changes affected swimming performance in ascidian larvae. Results of phylogenetic comparative analyse...
